On Sunday 19 May, the first edition of Fantastic 7 will take place in Cannes. This forum is intended to foster the talent and creativity of the fantastic, science-fiction and horror genres in the film industry, facilitating relationships and agreements with potential partners and co-producers. The idea came about as the result of talks between the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia - the next edition of which, the 52nd, will unspool in Sitges between 3 and 13 October 2019 - Bernardo Bergeret (the founder of the specialist Blood Window website) and the Cannes Marché du Film, at which said activities will take place.

The forum will showcase seven projects that are being presented by seven film festivals from all over the globe that either take an interest in the fantastic genre or carry it directly in their DNA: namely, the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (South Korea), the Cairo International Film Festival (Egypt), the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Mexico), the International Film Festival & Awards Macao, South by Southwest (USA), the Toronto International Film Festival (Canada) and Sitges (Spain).

Mónica García, head of industry at the Catalonian gathering, the world’s premier festival of its kind, and the developer of the Fantastic 7 project, remarks: “At Ventana Sur in Argentina, I met up with Bergeret, and he told me about the fact that the Cannes Marché du Film was interested in doing more to promote fantastic film. I combined our festival’s Pitchbox with our research file on the current state of the market and today’s consumption patterns in relation to fantastic film, thus starting a kind of observatory for festivals in various different territories. Through their project selections, they demonstrate the trends in terms of where the genre is likely to go next year and offer information about what is happening in their respective parts of the world.”

The projects selected by the above festivals are currently in production and will be presented to potential international investors in Cannes, with the ultimate aim of furthering their development: they are Superpower Girl (South Korea) by Soo-young Kim, The Blue Elephant 2 (Egypt) by Marwan Hamed, Escape by Chile’s Cristian Jiménez (Voice Over [+leggi anche:

). The latter is “an allegory of life, love and death; the merciless fight for survival and second chances”, according to the Fantastic 7 press pack.

Furthermore, Juan Antonio Bayona (A Monster Calls [+leggi anche:

) will be serving as a “godfather” for these initial pitches. “If we are to show off all the current trends, it’s also essential to make reference to the leaders of the pack and for each group to have a benefactor. As we are the promoters of Fantastic 7 and Bayona is one of the “children” of the Sitges Film Festival, I thought it was funny to see how, more than ten years ago, Guillermo del Toro endorsed Jota as he participated in the Cannes Critics’ Week with The Orphanage [+leggi anche:

. So it was all about bringing it full circle again, right here, as Bayona is the ideal person to demonstrate how a new director can emerge at a festival by receiving the support of someone more established… And his career can just lift off after that,” sums up Mónica García.
