Last week, creative directors Nuria Cubas and Fernando Vílchez presented the line-up of the 2019 edition of Filmadrid, the fifth iteration of an international festival that has successfully reached this milestone imbued with the same alternative, innovative and modern spirit it has had ever since it was founded. This year, a total of 90 titles, spanning a multitude of formats, will be screened in its various venues and will be vying for its awards. This edition will open, on 6 June, with a screening of the second fiction film by Lluís MiñarroLove Me Not, which premiered at the most recent International Film Festival Rotterdam and which, according to Cubas and Vílchez, is “hilarious, surreal and eccentric”, thus making it the perfect movie to get this cinephilic blowout started.

Standing out among the titles set to duke it out for the awards across the various different sections, in which youthful vitality will rub shoulders with experience and prestige, are the world premiere of the short film La jovencita no envejece, se descompone, a delightfully surprising movie directed by Galician helmer Álvaro F Pulpeiro; the Spanish premiere of the medium-length title Gulyabani by Turkey’s Gúrcan Keltek (Meteors [+leggi anche:

 by Portugal’s Carlos Conceição; the medium-length film Je peux changer mais pas à 100% by French artist and singer Amie-Sarah Barouh; the short O verde by Spaniard Luis Lechosa; the short Água forte by Mónica Baptista (Portugal/Peru); the short In Between Solstices (Spain) by Jorge Suárez Quiñones; the feature Rushing Green with Horses (Germany) by Ute Aurand; the short Imam pesmu da vam pevam (Serbia/UK) by Eluned Zoe Aiano and Alesandra Tatic; the short Party on the CAPS (Morocco/Switzerland) by Meriem Bennani; and the feature Phaidros, “a crazy roller-coaster ride” by Germany’s Mara Mattuschka.

As pointed out during the presentation by the festival’s heads, the Pasajes de cine (“Passageways of Film”) strand has come to represent a talent pool of young blood in the Spanish film world, as demonstrated by the fact that it was here that directors such as Carla Simón (Summer 1993 [+leggi anche:

) and Elena López Riera (whose short Those Who Lust was nominated for the European Film Awards, no less) showed off their first short films. This section will make room for up-and-coming filmmakers who are fearlessly investigating new film languages: for example, Victoria Oliver will broach the subject of surveillance in Eyes on You, while Ana Catalá will analyse the role of women in Valencia’s world-famous Falles festival in We Were All to Be Queens (a co-production with Germany). The animated short In Between the Walls of Perception (produced with Estonia) by Pablo Martínez BallarínMillions (and Millions) of Memories by Laura Rius (one of the directors of Les amigues de l’Àgata [+leggi anche:

) and Carlos Solano, and the journey through space and time served up by Alberto Van den Eynde in 2006 The Only Year That I Remember are just some of the other highlights.

Filmadrid 2019 will be brought to a close on 15 June by Keep an Eye Out [+leggi anche:
