The second-largest film festival in the Czech Republic, the Prague International Film Festival (PIFF) - Febiofest, is bracing for more changes for its upcoming 27th edition in 2020. The latest news is the appointment of Nikolaj Nikitin to the position of the festival’s artistic director.

“I’m glad that I can welcome Nikolaj to our team as the new artistic director of Febiofest. His extensive experience as a film expert, interest in new trends in this field and, especially, his international contacts will surely help us to push the festival forward and also enhance its reputation on the world stage,” says PIFF - Febiofest director Kamil Spáčil. As a former delegate of the Berlin International Film Festival, Nikitin has been focusing on Czech, regional and European filmmaking for more than 20 years.

PIFF – Febiofest initiated an overhaul in 2017 when it appointed a pair of artistic directors, Anna Kopecká and Michal Hogenauer, who took the reins from directors Hana Cielová and Štefan Uhrík, who had been in the role since 2008. Kopecká and Hogenauer brought in a new programming concept, which, in their words, “contributed to a better readability and understanding of the film selection”. Their intention translated into the screening of mainstream films in one section and arthouse fare in another in order to satisfy cineastes and mainstream audiences alike. Furthermore, the festival adopted more of a region-based approach during their tenure.

Nikolaj Nikitin served as a foreign delegate of the Berlinale for Central, Eastern and Northern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus from 2002-2019. He co-founded the quarterly film magazine Schnitt in 1995, served as the director of the Filmplus Film Festival in Cologne and worked as artistic director on the omnibus film Lost and Found, as well as acting as artistic director of the Palic European Film Festival. Nikitin is one of the founders of the School of Film Agents (SOFA) international workshop initiative, of which he has been the director since 2013. He teaches film and cultural management around the world and has been a project scout for the MIDPOINT educational programme since 2019.

The 27th edition of the Prague International Film Festival – Febiofest will take place from 19-27 March 2020.
