Ákos Badits is currently putting the finishing touches to the post-production of Garbage Theory (Űrpiknik), his feature debut, a dramedy laced with science-fiction elements. Lying at the heart of the film, and portrayed through the tale of an utterly extraordinary duo and their various misadventures, are friendship, the perpetual importance of human relationships, the unpredictable and mundane nature of existence, and the power of love, which transcends periods of history, genders and, indeed, entire universes. The cast includes Zalán Takács, Lili Walters, Veronika Varga, Benjámin Lengyel, Nóra Rainer-Micsinyei and Attila Árpa.

The story, written by Ákos Badits and Ágota Benedek, revolves around 23-year-old Panna, a lonely university student who is incapable of forming human relationships, until Boy (23), a self-loathing alien, arrives after Panna sent signals out into space. Boy tells Panna that the planet is doomed and that he is only interested in saving one artist in particular whom he greatly admires, Sarolta Zalatnay. The two strangers join forces: Panna helps Boy to accomplish his mission, and the alien takes her to an unknown planet in return. But the impending night will be filled with unexpected adventures…

Produced by Viktória Petrányi for Proton Cinema (with Annamária Ligosztájeva serving as line producer), Garbage Theory is being co-produced by VisionTeam and Post Office Films, as well as by Péter Kotchy and Gábor Rajna. Supported by the Hungarian National Film Fund, the feature was shot in Budapest in August and September, with István Balázs Balázs serving as DoP. The Hungarian theatrical distribution will be handled by Mozinet on an as-yet unconfirmed date, and the international sales are still under negotiation.

As a reminder, Proton Cinema produced all of Kornél Mundruczó’s films (Mundruczó founded the company with Viktória Petrányi), and recently staged Bad Poems [+leggi anche:
