A few days ago, Spain’s ICAA (Institute of Film and Audiovisual Arts), which reports to the country’s Ministry of Culture and Sports, launched a call (dubbed “Ten Promising Spanish Projects in Development”) to take part in an initiative intended to support film projects in development at the impending Marché du Film, which will take place on the website of the Cannes Film Festival on 25 June (click here to access the platform that will host the meetings). Among the impressive number of future features that were presented during the call (85), a clutch of ten have been chosen to take part in speed meetings that day with people interested in becoming partners, distributors, sales agents or contributors.

Three of the selected titles are documentaries, and the rest are fictions. The former group includes Singing on the Rooftops, a hybrid film produced by Inicia Films and set to be directed by Enric Ribes Reig. It has secured the support of the ICAA, TV3 and distributor BTeam, and it will be producer Valérie Delpierre who will be participating in the virtual meetings on 25 June. Another non-fiction film that will be presented to potential partners that day is the Spanish-Colombian movie The Daughter of the Volcano, the feature debut by filmmaker and journalist Jenifer de la Rosa, staged by Mayéutica Producciones (of which Amaya Izquierdo will be the representative), which has Icónica producciones, Rara Colectivo Audiovisual, Notikumi, Laboratorios Creativos Novaimagen and Elamedia on board as partners. The third doc in this programme is Tetuán, helmed by first-timer Iratxe Fresneda, with production duties entrusted to Pimpi & Nella Films, Marmoka films, Corpus Films and French firm Arena Films (with Gentzane Martínez speaking as a representative).

Among the rest of the Spanish projects that will be presented that day is a science-fiction flick (a co-production between France, Turkey and Spain) being prepared by acclaimed short filmmaker Chema García Ibarra: called The Sacred Spirit, it passed through ECAM’s La Incubadora (see the news), and it is relying on the production skills of Jaibo Films (producer Marina Perales Marhuenda will be the one extolling the virtues of this eagerly awaited title). It boasts partners such as Apellaniz & De Sosa, La Fabrica Nocturna, Teferruat Film, IVC, TVE, M+, the CNC, the Turkish Film Institute and La Aventura Audiovisual. Then there is the third feature by Spanish-based Argentinian filmmaker Marina Seresesky (The Open Door [+leggi anche:

), entitled A Thousand Lives, which has secured funding from Meridional Producciones (Álvaro Lavín will serve as its representative at the event), while Rocío Mesa will bring along her project Tobacco Barns, a production being staged by Seville-based outfit La Claqueta, which will be introduced by Olmo Figueredo, one of the most recent batch of Producers on the Move (read more here). The latter project has La Cruda Realidad and Secaderos AIE attached as partners, as well as having secured backing from the ICAA, the regional government of Andalusia, Canal Sur TV, Andersen Tax & Legal and distributor Latido Films.

The remaining projects participating in this day primarily focused on searching for financial partners are: Human/Animal, set to be directed by Alessandro Pugno (Playgrounds of Lead [+leggi anche:

), produced by Pecado Films (represented by José Alba), which has partners such as First Draft, Papavero Films (Italy) and Una Comunion (Mexico), and which has received support from Creative Europe MEDIA, Ibermedia, the regional government of Andalusia and the Piemonte Film Commission; Matadero by Santiago Fillol (Ich bin Enric Marco) and Canary Islands-based El Viaje Films (Jamie Weiss will be fielding questions from interested parties), which has partners such as Magoya Films (Argentina), 4A4 Films (France) and Nina Films (Spain); Sleepless City by Guillermo García López (winner of a Goya Award for the documentary Delicate Balance [+leggi anche:

), with the support of Sintagma Film SL and Turanga Films (Lina Badenes will be its spokesperson); and a Spanish-Dutch film that has secured MEDIA support, Zo Ver Weg (Far Away), helmed by actor Gerard Oms, starring David Verdaguer, Mario Casas and Déborah François, and produced by Phanta Film/Goldman Film and Zabriskie Films, the company run by filmmaker Carles Torras (Producers on the Move 2019), who will also be partaking in this day of 25-minute meetings.
