Think of it as a companion piece to Haneke’s Funny Games: a rollicking and nail-biting look at an affluent family destroyed by a mysterious evil visitor. Except in Borgman, Alex van Warmedam’s best work to date, the motives of the bearded stranger tormenting his hosts are far less obvious, turning the film into a dreadful, claustrophobic journey of its own kind.
Only a director as attuned to the human condition as Pedro Almodóvar could give us a character as riveting and complex as Julieta, a woman who decides to start anew, leaving everything and everyone she knows behind. Based on a true story, this gorgeously crafted thriller by Romanian director Tudor Giurgiu follows a young attorney struggling to do the right thing in a world mired in corruption and vendettas of all sorts. A case the lawyer is working on may bring the whole system down – or shatter everything he’s built for himself.

Eight-year-old Matias and his newly pregnant mother Laura find themselves forced to flee the house they live in to escape another outburst of violence from Fabian. A Holocaust tale - or rather, a tale of the Holocaust’s legacy on its survivors - set in Latin America, Mr Kaplan follows a Uruguayan Jew in his mid-70s on his hunt for a Nazi war criminal who’s supposedly hiding in the country’s interior. A quest for revenge that doubles as a fight to against the ghosts of an unspeakable atrocity.
More sex, lies and secrets come from a criminally overlooked work by Olivier Assayas: Demonlover, a paranoid thriller about a corporation dealing with 3-D manga porn, a gripping and must-see take on the artificial intimacies of our digital world.
A Monster with a Thousand Heads
