Juanjo Giménez (Barcelona, 1963) took home the Short Film Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2016, the European Film Academy’s European Short Film Award and the Goya, among many other trophies – as well as being nominated for the Oscar, the following year – with his fiction mini-film Timecode. That’s why we are now waiting with bated breath for his next work: the filmmaker is currently flitting between Barcelona and A Coruña shooting the feature Tres (lit. “Three”), starring Marta Nieto in the lead role and featuring a screenplay written by the director together with his regular collaborator on such matters, Pere Altimira. The cast is rounded off by Miki Esparbé, Francisco Reyes, and Galician thesps Luisa MerelasCris Iglesias and Fran Lareu. Giménez is thus helming his second feature, following Tilt, which was released in 2001 and starred Vicente Gil (Champions [+leggi anche:

, a psychological thriller presented at the Sitges Film Festival – plays a sound designer who adores her job and who spends countless hours on her own, recording Foley and wild tracks, editing and mixing... The studio is her last refuge: a place where she can forget about the broken relationships she has with her ex, her elderly mother and her colleagues. But even though she doesn’t know it yet, she’s beginning to slip out of sync. Her brain, as if it were a film with a faulty soundtrack, has begun to process sound later than the images it receives.

) to get hold of some more details on Tres. “The project was selected for the Berlinale Co-Production Market in 2018, and during the Cannes Film Festival that year, we inked the deal with the French producer in order to co-produce the film. We had already worked with the Lithuanian producer on our previous movie, and we’d had a great experience. We decided to set up a three-country co-production, which was necessary to allow us to scrape together the funding of more than €2 million, and the Lithuanian Film Fund supported the project from the very beginning.”

Given the situation that the whole world is faced with right now, we asked her how the pandemic is affecting the whole production and filming process. She replied, “It’s determining various things for us in myriad different ways: incorporating the protocols into the shoot – especially over the first few days, when the cast and crew had to adapt to this new scenario – has slowed us down. But at the moment, three weeks away from the end of the shoot, everything is going okay, and the protocols are working,” sums up Romeo.

Tres – the shoot for which will last a total of six weeks – is a production by Frida Films (Spain) in conjunction with Manny Films (France) and M-Films (Lithuania). The movie has secured support from the ICAA, ICEC and AGADIC, and boasts the involvement of TVG, Televisió de Catalunya and Canal+ France, as well as the MEDIA and Eurimages funds. Paris-based Le Pacte will be in charge of its international sales.
