The Bosphorus Film Lab (BFL) has wrapped its latest edition, which was also the inaugural one under İpek Tugay’s direction (see the interview). The winners of the industry section were announced during the awards ceremony of the eighth Bosphorus Film Festival on 30 October (see the news). Running entirely online for six days this year, from 24-29 October, the BFL focused on local projects that have an international approach and are either in development or in production.
In the Pitching Platform, 12 projects were competing, and the jury (comprising Per Eirik Gilsvik, project manager at SØRFOND; Frederic Boyer, artistic director of the Les Arcs European Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival; and Faruk Güven, TRT Co-productions and Foreign Productions manager) selected two winners.
The main TRT Co-production Award, provided by Turkey’s pubcaster (a partner of the BFL), went to Birds Fly to Mourn, the third feature by Ali Aydın, who received an award at Venice for his debut, Mold [+leggi anche:
scheda film], and whose sophomore work, Chronology, was screened at various festivals. The story follows successful writer A, who is struggling to write his new novel. At the same time, a sudden fear of death stalks him. What triggers A’s fear is the Fate Horse, which he has seen in his dreams. After each encounter with the horse, one of A’s relatives dies, and he anxiously waits for his turn to come. Written by Aydın, it is being produced by Müge Büyüktalaş for Istanbul-based Ultraviolet, in co-production with Kaf Film and Germany’s TamTam Films.
The Postbıyık Color Correction Award went to Presumption by first-time filmmaker Bilal Petek, which follows Tayfun, who is certain that his celebratory gunshot during a wedding killed the Bestil family’s youngest son, Furkan. Now, Tayfun is visiting the family to make amends with them, and he hopes for a fair outcome. Produced by M Tarık Ötgen (Balbal Film), who also wrote the script, the film is seeking co-producers and distribution.
In the Work in Progress platform, Bernd Buder (FilmFestival Cottbus), Anne Delseth (member of the selection committee for the Directors' Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival and the Locarno Film Festival) and Serdar Can (CGV Mars Distribution) picked two winners from among the seven projects presented.
The Special Prize of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which comes with 25,000 TL (€2,500), went to Snow and the Bear, directed by debutante Selcen Ergun and produced by Nefes Polat for Nefes’ Films in co-production with Germany’s Riva Film, Serbia’s Set Sail Film and the director herself. Co-penned by Ergun and Yeşim Aslan, the story is set in a small, snowy town in the north-eastern corner of Turkey, and follows Aslı, a young nurse who has recently been stationed there. When a man from the town, Hasan, goes missing after arguing with Aslı, different theories start flying around about it (see the news). Last year, the film won the TRT Co-production Award, and the team is now looking for a festival strategy, gap financing, post-production and a sales agent.
The CGV Mars Film Distribution Prize, which was handed out for the third year running, was given to Eflatun, directed and produced by Cüneyt Karakuş (Karakuş Film). Eflatun went blind when she was five and keeps on working as a watch repairer, the job that her father left her. Having lost both of her parents, she takes care of herself, feeds stray animals and waters her flowers. Although Eflatun is waiting for the man whose voice she fell in love with, she doesn’t know who he might be, exactly. The film is looking for a festival strategy and distribution.
