An unmissable meeting for French industry professionals, the Film Meetings of the ARP (Civil society of Auteurs-Directors-Producers) will have a very particular 30th edition. Initially planned for the first time at the Touquet-Paris-Plage, in the end the event will take place online on 5 and 6 November (viewable live here) due to health reasons, with four debates that will allow to precisely take the pulse of a sector in great turmoil and to identify the major stakes of the current accelerated changes.

What will be the future for French cinema in an uncertain present with exploitation at half-mast? What will be the impact of the health crisis on the funding of oeuvres, their broadcast, the uses of audiences? Will the government’s recovery plan be enough? What does the direct competition of platforms imply for the sector? How to best reform the sophisticated mechanisms of French regulation? This many hot topics that will be decrypted Thursday morning by Sidonie Dumas (general director of Gaumont), Émilie Georges (Memento Films International), Carole Scotta (Haut et Court, co-president of the DIRE - Reunited European Independent Distributors) and Isabelle Madelaine (Dharamsala - president of the Union of Cinema Producers).

What is the cultural sovereignty of Europe facing the power of extra-European operators and their strategies that go against the international rules of commerce (dumping) or of intellectual property? How can one protect the strategic European assets (catalogues, theatre networks, etc.) and ensure the proper observance of European rules by foreign actors? How can European creation be encouraged, its audiences reinforced and the economic agents working nationally and across Europe supported? These questions will be discussed Thursday afternoon by Thierry Breton (European internal market commissioner), Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland (honorary president of the FERA), Roch-Olivier Maistre (president of the Superior Audiovisual Council), Sarah Chazelle (Jour2Fête) and Pierre-Antoine Capton (Mediawan).

Friday morning, 6 November, a debate moderated by director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (co-president of this edition of the Film Meetings with actor Roschdy Zem) and her counterpart Pierre Jolivet (president of the ARP) will see notably producer Marc Missonnier (Moana Films and vice-president of the Union of Cinema Producers) analyse the possible partnerships with SVOD platforms. What will be their investment choices, especially in terms of diversity, of pre-purchases and independence? What place are they aiming for in the media chronology? How will they articulate the streaming of films with cinema releases? It should be noted that Netflix was meant to be part of this debate, but eventually cancelled, an absence undoubtedly related to the transposition process (read the news) currently taking place and lead by the European directive SMA (Audiovisual Media Services) defining the obligations of SVOD platforms to finance French and European production.

Finally, Friday afternoon will be dedicated to historical operators’ strategies to face this competition from platforms. What place do they want to give to French cinema, notably to differentiate themselves from other offers – that is, what funding, exposure and evolutions of linear and delinearised broadcasting? This will be discussed by Delphine Ernotte-Cunci (president of France Télévisions), Maxime Saada (president of Canal+), Nicolas de Tavernost (president of M6)m producer Édouard Mauriat (1001 Productions and co-president of the Liaison Bureau of Cinematographic Organisations - BLOC) and deputy Aurore Bergé. The debate will be moderated by the executive director of the ARP, Mathieu Debusschère.

Two more discussions to point out: one on Thursday on scores and images (with director Patrice Leconte and composer Alex Jaffray under the patronage of the Sœurs Jumelles event initiated by Julie Gayet), and the other on Friday with Cinéastes! which will be an exchange between Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Maïmouna Doucouré and Marjane Satrapi.
