, her latest collaboration with British great Joanna Hogg, has just been announced, with A24 taking world rights in advance of next month’s EFM.

With filming having wrapped in December last year in Wales, under COVID-secure guidelines, the project gives Swinton a headlining role for Hogg, after her supporting turns in The Souvenir [+leggi anche:

. They began their film careers together when Swinton starred in Hogg’s school graduation film, Caprice, in 1986.

Suggesting a turn towards the gothic for Hogg, the film, billed as a “ghost story” and a “mystery-drama”, will follow the story of a middle-aged daughter (Swinton) and her elderly mother, who must confront long-buried secrets when they return to their former family home, a once-grand manor that has become a nearly vacant hotel.

Other actors in the cast include Joseph Mydell, Carly-Sophia Davies and Alfie Sankey-Green. Hogg has traditionally cast first-time actors (like Swinton’s own daughter, Honor Swinton-Byrne, in The Souvenir) and non-professionals alongside experienced names in her films.

The Eternal Daughter is being produced by Ed Guiney, Eimhear McMahon and Emma Norton for Ireland’s Element Pictures (The Favourite [+leggi anche:

, Normal People) and Joanna Hogg for her own JWH Films (UK). BBC Film backed development and production, whilst Hogg’s regular champion Martin Scorsese is executive-producing for Sikelia Productions (USA). This particular project has long been mooted for Hogg; it was initially announced as the follow-up to her 2007 breakthrough Unrelated [+leggi anche:

Hogg’s next film, The Souvenir: Part II, is already completed and is expected to premiere at one of this year’s major festivals.
