The Canary Islands International Film Market has opened the call for applications to take part in its 17th edition, which will take place from 28-30 April in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The rendezvous will be adapted in line with the new health-and-safety conditions, and will this year unspool in a hybrid format (both in-person and online). The CIIF Market has established itself as a strategic focal point for the Canary Islands’ audiovisual sector, in order to attract producers, aid the discovery of new projects, and offer up the islands and their assets for shoots. Its objective is to generate synergies between film production outfits, TV channels, distributors and other key players in the industry, in order to foster the co-production of projects intended for the European and international market. Likewise, its ambition is also to inspire audiovisual creation and promote synergies between the film and publishing sectors.

European and international titles at the development stage are eligible to be submitted, be they fiction or documentary features, TV movies or TV series (fiction or documentary). They should be in search of funding, and 20% of their budget must already be in place. Transmedia, cross-media and multiplatform projects can be sent in, provided that they have a cinematographic film as one of their main pillars. The call is also open to Spanish literary works of all genres and aimed at all types of audience.

The 2021 CIIF Market will select 12 audiovisual projects and three literary works, taking into account criteria such as quality, international reach, the talent of the producers and directors, and feasibility. Factors that will be particularly highly valued are whether this is the first time that the project has been presented at a forum, whether the production company has staged at least one international co-production, format-related innovation and whether there is a plan in place to use new models of distribution and financing, as well as previous works completed by the director and/or producer. In the case of Spanish literary works, the quality of the works, the talent of the authors, and the feasibility of them being adapted for film, television or digital platforms are additional factors that will be borne in mind.

Production outfits and authors interested in taking part in the 17th Canary Islands International Film Market can send in their projects or literary works until 15 March 2021, via the submission form available on the website. Registration is free, whereas the participation fee will only become payable if the project or literary work is actually selected.

Another novelty of the 2021 CIIF Market is the fact that pitching sessions will be organised for the selected projects in the presence of national producers and industry professionals as an in-person, physical event (pandemic permitting) and in the presence of international experts via streaming. Participants will have the opportunity to go along to a series of meetings and activities with invited professionals and possible investors interested in co-producing their projects or adapting their literary works, as well as attending various different conferences and talks. Furthermore, they will be able to compete for a range of prizes intended to boost their international profile.
