The second Arte France Cinéma selection committee for 2021 (steered by Olivier Père) has opted to co-produce and pre-purchase three projects.

Stealing focus among them is Arnaud Desplechin’s Brother and Sister [+leggi anche:

). The story revolves around a brother and sister who are nearing their fifties... Alice is an actress, Louis was a teacher and a poet. They no longer speak to one another and have been avoiding each other for over twenty years, but the death of their parents will force them to cross paths… This feature film is set to be steered by the filmmaker’s usual partner in crime Why Not Productions.

This will be the 12th fiction feature film by Desplechin, who currently boasts Deception in post-production (read our article), and who has competed six times in Cannes (in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2008, 2013 and, more recently, in 2019 via Oh Mercy! [+leggi anche:

and Ismaël’s Ghosts were likewise unveiled on the Croisette in 2015 (during the Directors’ Fortnight) and in 2017 (opening the section out-of-competition) respectively.

Arte France Cinéma has also selected L’Envol by Pietro Marcello, which is produced by French firm CG Cinéma in league with Italy’s Avventurosa, and which already enjoys the backing of The Italian Ministry for Culture’s Film and Audiovisual Department (news). (which competed in Venice in 2019, scooping the Volpi Cup for Best Actor), the filmmaker will be shooting in France for the very first time (as of August, in Normandy and the Hauts-de-France region) to delve into a romantic folktale recounting the story of one woman’s emancipation across a twenty-year period between 1919 and 1939, at a time of great inventions and even greater dreams. Standing tall in the cast are Juliette Jouan, Raphaël Thierry, Louis Garrel and Noémie Lvovsky, while music will come courtesy of Gabriel Yared.

The TV channel is likewise set to lend its support to Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s Forever Young [+leggi anche:

, whose main parts will be played by Louis Garrel and Micha Lescot. Co-written by the director alongside Noémie Lvovsky and Agnès de Sacy, the story unfurls in the late 1980s, in the company of the 20-year-olds Stella, Victor, Adèle and Etienne, who sit the entrance exam to the renowned school within the Nanterre-Amandiers Theatre, founded by Patrice Chéreau and Pierre Romans. Thrust full throttle into life, passion, acting and love, they will reach a turning point in their lives, and experience their first real tragedy, together. Shooting on this Ad Vitam Production and Ex Nihilo-steered movie will kick off on 31 May.
