If, upon closing your eyes, you could see through someone else’s and the world turned out to be a far better place, you’d be left with some far-reaching ethical dilemmas: such is the idea behind Mátyás Szabó’s Wandering Leaves, whose filming has now entered the home straight having kicked off on 17 March in Budapest. Standing tall in the cast of this first feature film to come courtesy of Szabó (who previously turned heads with short films such as The Coming and The Border) are Benett Vilmányi (well-received in Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time [+leggi anche:

among other works, and soon to be seen in Eviction) and well-seasoned actor Andor Lukáts (who also appeared in Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time and Those Who Remained).

Written by Mátyás Szabó together with Csaba Mikó and Bálint Barcsai, the story homes in on Ábel, a young man in his late twenties who works for a child rescue firm led by the blind Professor Fellegi. Ábel has a special ability: whenever he closes his eyes, he is able to see through the eyes of lost children and therefore help to find them. His work is his life, which he shares only with elderly Aunt Mituk. Everything changes, however, when he makes a mistake and begins to see through the eyes of a woman called Vera. Thanks to her, he begins to see the world differently and a special relationship develops between them. They grow closer and closer, but this strange harmony can’t go on forever…

Produced by Petra Iványi on behalf of Filmteam (who also partnered with the filmmaker on his short films), Wandering Leaves has notably enjoyed the support of the Hungarian NFI’s Incubator programme. The work was shot entirely in Budapest with Kristóf M. Deák at the wheel of photography. Distribution in Hungarian cinemas and international sales are still under negotiation.

For the record, Filmteam is currently overseeing post-production on Daddy and Other Wolves by Gábor Rohonyi and Csaba Vékes (read our article), with recent offerings including FOMO: Fear of Missing Out [+leggi anche:

by Attila Hartung, whose upcoming feature film Chain Reaction, which was selected for the Les Arcs Film Festival’s Co-Production Village back in January (read our news), also features on the firm’s film slate.
