For this year’s iteration, the Cannes Marché du Film is launching impACT, a new programme that focuses on diversity, inclusion, representation, sustainability, and responsible and ethical data use at every stage of the filmmaking process – not only on the screen, but also behind the camera and in all phases of production. To this end, Microsoft is supporting the creation of the first edition of impACT, which has been designed by the Marché du Film team in partnership with Think-Film Impact Production.

For its launch, the programme is building a pioneering showcase and platform connecting creativity and social change, and aims to start discussions about key topics that are influencing today’s film landscape as well as offering industry professionals the knowledge and tools they need in order to make decisions and take action so as to facilitate the upcoming changes that will influence the sector in the future.

During the programme, top experts, visionaries and creatives will explore how to drive social and economic impact as well as how this will affect and shape entertaining, meaningful creative content. Furthermore, thanks to the outcomes generated by impACT, the participants can be empowered and become familiar with how the ripple effect of impact can change both the future of storytelling and the film industry itself.

Jérôme Paillard, executive director of Cannes’ Marché du Film, stated: “The Marché du Film is proud to be embracing the importance of social impact throughout our creative industries in an even deeper way.” Also, Julie Brill, chief privacy officer at Microsoft Corporation, explained: “Future innovations in the film industry will be driven by digital transformation and insightful data analysis. Microsoft is proud to collaborate with Cannes’ Marché du Film and Think-Film Impact Production on the importance of privacy and responsible data use in creating the future of cinema.” Meanwhile, Danielle Turkov Wilson, Think-Film Impact Production founder and executive director, added: “It is crucial to unlock the impact value in the film industry to advance social issues. We are truly excited to help the film industry realise its impact potential.”

According to the schedule of impACT, which is an extension of the Cannes Film Festival and Marché du Film’s investment in corporate social responsibility, the programme will reflect on the new reality in the film industry. Each of the events will offer professionals an opportunity to exchange ideas openly and freely, reflect on the current climate, engage in constructive debate and focus on the values inherent in a diverse film industry with content that speaks to all audiences. To offer a broader perspective, some of the elements of the new initiative will overlap with several of the Marché’s existing programmes and add new perspectives.

Running throughout all of the Marché events and programmes, impACT will offer inspirational speeches, round-tables and master classes. Overall, the initiative aims to foster more meaningful storytelling, and give the industry the insight and tools it needs to achieve equality at different levels of filmmaking, from script to screen.
