), a historical drama about surviving in the heart of the Warsaw Ghetto. It tells the true story of a group of Jewish actors who, with the aim of bringing a glimmer of hope to their compatriots, perform a musical comedy at the theatre while their lives are turned upside down by a life-or-death decision.

The original screenplay, penned by the director together with German novelist David Safier, recreates the staging of the work Milosc Szuka Mieszkania (lit. “Love Looks for an Apartment), which was performed in Warsaw’s Femina Theatre in winter 1942. The play we see in the movie remains faithful to the text of the musical comedy written in the ghetto itself by Jewish-Polish playwright and composer Jerzy Jurandot, but it was only the lyrics to the songs that survived. Therefore, a new soundtrack has been composed specifically for the film, while remaining loyal to the tradition of musical theatre prevalent at that time.

The feature was shot with a cast of British, Irish, Italian, Danish and Swedish actors: Clara Rugaard (whom we saw in Good Favour [+leggi anche:

not long ago) top the bill. The songs performed by the cast were filmed live, and the filmmakers have used the original sound bites captured during these scenes, without resorting to dubbing or lip-syncing.

The plot unfolds in January 1942, as 400,000 Jews from all over Poland have spent more than a year confined by the Nazis to a tiny ghetto slap bang in the middle of Warsaw. Outside, life goes on; inside, its inhabitants struggle to survive. Nevertheless, the high wall can’t prevent the formation of a troupe of actors who, one frozen winter’s night, put on a musical comedy show in the Femina Theatre. The spectators laugh and get teary-eyed as they watch this love story, forgetting all about their dire situation for a brief moment. Behind the scenes, the actors are confronted with a life-or-death dilemma: the chance to make a break for it after the show.

In the words of the director, who has just been at Sitges to premiere one of the episodes of the series Historias para no dormir that he has directed, Love Gets a Room is a cinematic and performative experience that unveils a side of the occupation that film has not yet shown: how all kinds of artists (actors, musicians and writers) pressed on with their activities, even in the most unlikely of circumstances, in order to ignite a flickering flame in the middle of the darkness.”

Love Gets a Room is a production by Nostromo Pictures together with Love Gets a Room AIE, in conjunction with the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Department of Culture, and with the involvement of Televisió de Catalunya and Crea SGR. The international sales are being handled by Lionsgate. A Contracorriente Films will release it in Spanish theatres on 3 December, after it has taken part in the Seville European Film Festival the month before, where it will be presented in the official section (out of competition).
