After polling its members from festivals, distributors, journalists and other industries associated with the short film world, the Short Film Conference (SFC) has announced that its annual Short of the Year for 2021 is My Uncle Tudor (Belgium/Portugal/Hungary) directed by Olga Lucovnicova. The award was announced during the Short Film Conference’s event held at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.

My Uncle Tudor is a powerful and moving documentary which, after 20 years of silence, sees the director travel back to the home of her great-grandparents in Moldova, where she suffered a deep-rooted trauma.

The Short of the Year caps off a hugely successful year for the film. After premiering at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film, the film screened at numerous festivals across the world including San Sebastian, Hot Docs and Krakow. It also won the 2021 European Film Award for Best Short.

The 2021 SFC Short Of The Year award is sponsored by Festival Regard – Saguenay International Short Film Festival, which – when the worldwide situation permits – will invite the filmmaker to attend their next on-site event in Canada.

On winning the award, Lucovnicova said: "In my film, I tried to break the silence in my family, but film festivals helped to break the silence in the world. Each new victory makes my voice louder, a voice that speaks for every child who faced abusive behaviour but couldn't speak about it. I want to thank everyone for their votes and appreciation. Your support means a lot to me!"

The film was voted on by the membership of the Short Film Conference, with a worldwide network of 110 members – festival representatives, programmers, agencies, distributors & journalists from 42 countries and 6 continents. Members include Berlinale Shorts, PÖFF Shorts (Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival), Oberhausen, Tampere and Vienna.

The Short Film Conference has been in existence since 1970 as a non-profit association and the only international organisation seeking to unite the global short film community. Its activities range from organising industry events and the annual Short Film Conference to monitoring and researching the short film industry, informing its professionals & lobbying for the rights of short films and their creators.

My Uncle Tudor was produced by the Luca School of Arts (Belgium) in association with Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon) and the University of Film and Arts (Budapest).
