The 16th edition of Spanish Screenings, the Málaga Film Festival’s audiovisual market for Spanish productions, kicks off on 21 March as a hybrid version – both in person and online, via the spanishscreenings platform – and will continue unspooling until Thursday 24 March. During the four days of the market, international buyers, sales agents, distributors, festival programmers and producers will be able to attend the event and will be on the lookout for the freshest Spanish productions.

The gathering is organised by MAFIZ, the Málaga Film Festival’s industry area, with input from the ICAA, ICEX and the Regional Government of Andalusia. This year’s edition will be especially fascinating and significant, as it is set to unspool in a supersize format, where new sections adapted to the changes in, and needs of, the international market will be incorporated into proceedings, with greater diversity on display alongside a higher volume of content.

And so, among the activities that will unspool at this edition of Spanish Screenings are: Screenings, consisting of projections in Yelmo Vialia Málaga cinemas, where buyers and international festival programmers will be able to watch recently produced Spanish flicks; Market Premieres, a space equipped for three private screenings of films that have not yet been shown at any other international market; Neo Screenings, screenings of the most innovative and daring Spanish movies; Next from Spain, where trailers for upcoming Spanish releases will be on display; Spanish WIP, with Spanish films at the post-production stage selected for Málaga WIP (see the news); the Spanish Coproduction Forum, featuring projects that were presented at the 2022 Málaga Festival Fund & Coproduction Event (see the news); Remake Day, a whole day dedicated to this new format for selling Spanish audiovisual content, with the involvement of prominent international producers; Literary Adaptations, a strand that will grant access to literary works in order for them to be adapted as audiovisual efforts; Regional Film Hub, a new platform for the promotion and distribution of films from the various different Spanish autonomous communities, also allowing Spain’s film institutes to screen the movies that they backed at the development and production stage; Spain Colourful Diversity, a space where the various Spanish autonomous communities can present their locations, support plans for film shoots, and tax breaks and incentives for producing works in their territories; Industry Club, a place for meetings, intended for producers, international distributors and general participants; Film Library, an online platform where buyers, distributors and international festival programmers can watch Spanish films and TV series; and Hack MAFIZ Málaga, a hotbed of talent at the disposal of the audiovisual industry, which is an innovative event involving digital creators and platforms utilising new technological formats.
