The storyline introduces us to a couple, Lara (played by Loreto Mauleón) and Daniel (Iñigo Gastesi), who met one stormy day but whose relationship never came to much. Before, they were young and full of passion, and the future seemed a far-away country replete with wonderful opportunities. Years later, their paths cross again – during another storm, in the same city – but they have both changed significantly. Straddling two different times, the past and the present, La quietud de la tormenta explores the love story between two people whose lives, in different circumstances and at another time, might just have trodden different paths.

The director states, “This is a story about the impossibility of rekindling things, but also about the impossibility of a certain type of cinema. It talks about people from a generation that’s unable find its niche – people who don’t think their lives are worth talking about. There’s a kind of disenchantment that is shared here by two strangers who, in actual fact, are not so unknown to each other; two lives that intersect in the present, but which also came into contact before, albeit fleetingly.

“I want to take advantage of this opportunity to be creative with as much freedom as possible: shooting in two separate parts, which are months apart, rewriting the text with co-screenwriter Álex Merino [who is also immersed in his directorial debut, Las flores del infierno] up until the very last minute, and relying on the enthusiasm and energy of a team comprising both first-timers and more seasoned professionals,” continues Gastesi. “In the film, there are topics and forms that I dealt with previously in my earlier short films, such as the emergence of coincidences, mirrors and reflections in the simultaneous blossoming and decline of a couple, the second time around, backtracking and cracks in a linear narrative, and vertigo.”

La quietud en la tormenta is a Vidania Films production that has secured support from the Basque Government. It is slated for release in autumn this year.
