scheda film] and the 2014 documentary Pelican in the Desert – the film focuses on the coming of age of a young art student, set against the tumultuous political backdrop of January 1991, when Latvia declared its independence amidst fierce Soviet resistance. The movie was produced by Mistrus Media in co-production with Artbox and Staron-Film. It was financed by the Latvian Film Fund, the Polish Film Institute, the Lithuanian Film Centre and Eurimages.

Other European winners in the International Narrative Competition include veteran Polish actress Dorota Pomykala, who won Best Performance in an International Narrative Feature. Her turn in the lead role of Anna Jadowska’s Woman on the Roof [+leggi anche:

There was more European cinematography-related success in the festival’s Documentary Competition, as Boris Levy picked up the corresponding award for Tessa Louise-Salomé’s The Wild One (France). The film tells the life story of Jack Garfein, a Holocaust survivor, Actors Studio figure and controversial filmmaker. In the festival’s New Narrative Competition, a Special Jury Mention was given to Floor van der Meulen, the director of Pink Moon [+leggi anche:

In the Shorts Competition, Norway’s Night Ride from director Eirik Tveiten won Best Narrative Short. The film, which has already won the Film Critics’ Award at the Norwegian Film Festival, follows Ebba, who is waiting for the tram to go home after a party, but the ride takes an unexpected turn. Following its world premiere at the festival, Christian Cargill’s Heart Valley (UK) won Best Documentary Short, while the Belgian effort Daydreamers by Ante Pask won the Student Visionary Award. The film, about a father and daughter whose shared passion for motorcycles is threatened by an eye condition, emanates from the Antwerp-based RITCS School of Arts.
