For its ninth edition, the Berlinale Series Market returns to the Potsdamer Platz as part of the European Film Market (EFM), from 20-22 February. The professionals present, including buyers, creatives, industry experts and content traders, will be able to attend all of the key locations (all within walking distance of each other) in person. More precisely, the conferences will be held at the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion and Reconciliation, the screenings and showcases at CinemaxX, and the industry panels at Gropius Bau. As in previous years, the programme includes talks, showcases by international and national production companies, and market screenings. Also, under the Berlinale Series Market Selects label, a carefully curated selection of high-quality series being traded at the market will be showcased.

EFM director Dennis Ruh underlines: “After several years in the Zoo Palast and two years in a virtual format, I am delighted to see the return of the Berlinale Series Market as an in-person programme at the heart of the market’s infrastructure at Potsdamer Platz. Since many companies that used to exclusively handle film rights have now added high-quality serial content to their portfolios, and the strict separation of the past has dissolved as a result, we are combining both worlds in one location to structure the market experience even better. Once again, there is a wide and varied spectrum of topics and international projects to discover in the series sector, which will be presented in talk formats and showcases, as well as in the series screenings.”

In line with this year’s EFM Industry Sessions theme, “Shift Happens”, the Berlinale Series Market will explore the changes in the industry along with future-orientated topics and trends in the world of series. Furthermore, the Baltic States as “Country in Focus” partners will provide insights into current content, as well as both national and international (co-)production conditions.

The Berlinale Series Market will open with the “Adapting to the Market” session, where data analysis company Ampere Analysis will provide a global overview of the industry. The panel will then discuss the role of global distributors and the ways they are responding to changing market conditions. “Entrepreneurial Showrunners: The Future of Creative” will shed further light on the new trend of creatives working collectively by founding their own companies to maintain greater control over their content.

David Bernad, producer of the HBO series The White Lotus, will offer an exclusive look at his work on the hit show. Ron Ninio, co-creator and showrunner of the Israeli series Kvodo, the original that spawned the US version Your Honor, is set to reveal how a series format from a comparatively small market can achieve huge international success through adaptation. Also, the panel “Quo Vadis Docu Series” will be examining the currently popular docu-series format.

Regarding the showcases, “Up Next: Germany” presents current and upcoming series projects from the titular country, including the geopolitical thriller about Alfred Herrhausen, Herrhausen - Der Herr des Geldes, the coming-of-age mystery story Feelings, the historical German-Swiss co-production Davos and the investigative documentary Juan Carlos.

Finally, for the third year running, Berlinale Series Market Selects is presenting 16 shows hailing from five continents. Here are the titles taking part in Berlinale Series Market Selects 2022:
