Maria Hofstäetter si è rivelata all’attenzione internazionale recitando in Canicola (Hundstage) di Ulrich Seidl per cui ha vinto il premio per la miglior interpretazione femminile al festival internazionale di Gijon (Spagna) nel 2001. L’attrice ha recitato anche in Poppitz, uno spot di grande successo girato da Harald Sicheritz, in Wolfzeit di Michael Haneke, Twinni di Ulrike Schweiger e Hurensohn di Michael Sturminger. Hofstäetter è anche nota per il suo lavoro in teatro, dove ha vinto un premio internazionale per Die Präsidentinnen di Werner Schwab.

"My last film was a big challenge, because I played a mentally handicapped girl. And when we were shooting the film nobody knew that I only was acting. All my colleagues thought that I really was handicapped - and this for four months! My main work is independent theatre in Austria. I act and produce in a small theatre-group and sometimes I work in films. I'm very interested in non-commercial films, in auteur-films... that's what I want to do.
