In an interview with British daily newspaper, The Independent, British film director Stephen Daldry whose feature, The Hours, just won two Golden Globes for best film (drama) and actress (drama) for Nicole Kidman, revealed that he would love to return to the London stage full time. Adding that he would not turn down the post of artistic director of the National Theatre.
“I don’t think it’s true that one has to make a choice between film and theatre,” he said, “but I’m sure I’ll run a theatre again at some point”.
Stephen Daldry used to manage the Royal Court Theatre in London in the 1990s. In 2000 one of the UK’s leading production companies, Working Title, approached Daldry to direct his first feature film, Dancer subsequently renamed Billy Elliot. That film received three Oscar nominations, including best director.
Following the huge international success of Billy Elliot, Miramax approached Daldry to direct the US$21m (Euros21m), The Hours, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Ed Harris. Daldry is scheduled to direct a new project in Hollywood entitled The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay based on Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
