Co-written by Ozon and Mathieu Hippeau, the film centres on the young, beautiful and rich couple Mousse and Louis, whose lives have been taken over by drugs. One day they overdose and Louis dies. Mousse survives, but discovers she is pregnant.

Louis’ mother insists that she have an abortion, so Mousse decides to run away and hide in a house far from Paris. A few months later, Louis’ brother joins her in this safe haven. He wants to help her and tell her his secret.

Like Ricky, The Refuge is produced by Claudie Ossard and Chris Bolzli for Eurowide (who are also handling post-production on Jan Kounen’s Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky) and has co-production support from Italy’s Teodora Film (10% investment). Domestic distribution will be managed by Le Pacte.

At the 62nd Cannes Festival Film Market, Le Pacte will also be hoping for success with Christophe Honoré’s Making Plans for Lena (see news), Emmanuel Salinger’s La Grande Vie (“The High Life”, see news), Jérôme Bonnell’s La Dame de Trèfle (“The Queen of Clubs”, see news), Serge Elissalde’s animated film Le Jour des Corneilles (“The Day of the Crows”, in production) and Mathieu Amalric’s On Tour (set to start shooting at the end of April).
