Shooting starts on De la Iglesia’s new film

, and just over half a year since he took over as president of the Film Academy.

His new film, Balada Triste de Trompeta (“Sad Trumpet Ballad”) started shooting today, January 18. Over nine weeks, the Basque director and his team will be filming in locations around Madrid, Alicante and the Ciudad de La Luz studios.

The film, produced by Spanish companies Tornasol Films and Castafiore Films, in co-production with France’s La Fabrique 2, will star Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre and Carolina Bang. There will also be minor appearances by Santiago Segura, Sancho Gracia, Fernando Guillén Cuervo, Raul Arévalo and Fofito, among others.

Written by De la Iglesia, Balada Triste de Trompeta is set between 1937, in the middle of the Civil War, and 1973. It centres on Javier and Sergio, two terrifying and disfigured clowns, who fight to the death for the ambiguous love of a dancer.
