Cuenca to shoot La Mitad de Oscar in Almeria

by

Manuel Martín Cuenca is on the final leg of shooting on his third narrative feature, La Mitad de Oscar (“Half of Oscar”). The five-week shoot, which kicked off on February 3, is taking place in locations around the Almeria region, including its capital, Cabo de Gata, La Isleta and Playa de los Genoveses.

The director has described the film as "a story of impossible love, in the style of a Greek tragedy". It centres on Oscar, a security guard in a saltworks, whose routine is broken when he finds out that his grandfather’s health has worsened.

His sister, María, with whom he has had no contact for many years, also turns up. But both siblings share a secret and the girl’s arrival will open the Pandora’s box.

The two main characters are played by Rodrigo Sáenz de Heredia and Verónica Echegui. The rest of the cast includes French actor Dennis Deyrie, Manuel Martínez Roca and Antonio de la Torre.

Martín Cuenca has worked both on narrative features – The Bolshevik’s Weakness (2003) and Hard Times (2005) – and documentaries – The Cuban Game (2001) and Carrillo, Comunista (2009). His current project involves a high level of personal commitment, for he is acting as director, screenwriter (in collaboration with Alejandro Hernández) and producer (through his own company, La Loma Blanca).

La Mitad de Oscar, which has received co-production backing from 14 Pies Audiovisual and the Cuban Institute of Cinematic Art and Industry (ICAIC), has a modest budget of €1.3m.
