Canijo’s Fantasia Lusitana to open IndieLisboa

The 2010 IndieLisboa festival (April 22-May 2) will kick with Fantasia Lusitana by Portuguese director João Canijo.

Produced by Periferia Films, Canijo’s new film is a documentary about Lisbon during WWII, when the country’s capital became the frontier between Europe and the American continent for nearly 100,000 people escaping the Nazi regime.

Using archive images and refugee testimonies read by actors Hanna Schygulla, Rudiger Vogler and Christian Patey, the film tries to trace the legacy of those people and how their presence influenced the national perception of WWII.

With its official national and international programme still to be announced, IndieLisboa has nevertheless unveiled some of the titles that will show in avant-première: Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?; Abel Ferrara’s Napoli Napoli Napoli; and Samuel Maoz’s Lebanon [+see also:
