First Berlin Bear contenders announced

The first eight titles in the Official Selection of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival have been confirmed. Like opening film, True Grit by the Coen brothers, announced a few days ago, Wim Wenders' new 3D movie Pina (Germany/France), on the late choreographer Pina Bausch, will screen out of competition, as will Coriolanus, British star actor Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut starring himself, Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox and James Nesbitt.

Five Competition films are now official, including three German (co)productions: Andres Veiel's If Not Us, Who?, starring August Diehl; The Future by Miranda July, the American director/writer of Me and You and Everyone We Know), co-produced in Berlin by Razor Film and sold by The Match Factory; and German/Dutch/Turkish title Our Grand Despair by Seyfi Teoman.

Besides Coriolanus, the UK is represented in competition by Jonathan Sagall's Lipstikka, co-produced with Israel. The fifth candidate known so far is a US debut, Victoria Mahoney's Yelling to the Sky.
