She Monkeys win top Dragon in Göteborg

The coveted SEK one million (€113,500) cash prize attached to the Dragon Award for Best Nordic Film was presented to Swedish director Lisa Aschan for her first feature film She Monkeys [+see also:

at the Göteborg International Film Festival’s closing ceremony on Saturday. The film about two teenage girls playing an ambiguous game of seduction and control was also bestowed the FIPRESCI Prize.

“This was a film we loved unconditionally. It stayed with us all the time, and finally we felt that we must give this award to support a new, very special talent,” said the Dragon Award jury, which comprised directors Danis Tanovic and Lisa Siwe, actress Maria Bonnevie, screenwriter Mogens Rukov, and producers Aleksi Bardy and Gudrun Edda Thorhannesdottir.

The Atmo (Metropia) production is now headed for Berlin, where it will screen in Generation 14Plus. The Yellow Affair handles world sales.

The Ingmar Bergman Debut Film Award went to the US film Blue Valentine by Derek Cianfrance, while Marius Holst’s successful Norwegian drama King of Devil’s Island [+see also:

won the Kodak Nordic Vision Award for Best Cinematography.

Göteborg festival-goers gave the Audience Choice honours to Anders Grönros youth drama I Miss You (Best Nordic Film) and Vibeke Løkkeberg’s Norwegian documentary Tears of Gaza (Best Feature Film).

Nima Sarvestani’s I Was Worth 50 Sheep won the Best Swedish Documentary Dragon, while another documentary, Mother's Comeback by Åsa Ekman, won the Swedish Church Prize for Best Swedish Film.

Mimmi Spång and Rebecka LaFrenz (Garagefilm International), producers of the Swedish film Sebbe [+see also:

, received the Lorens Award and its SEK500,000 (€56,800) from Stockholm Postproduction for the free development of their next feature film.
