Admissions drop in the first trimester

There have been almost 3.5m admissions recorded in the first trimester of 2006 in Portuguese theatres. Recently announced by the ICAM, these figures represent a drop of 16.5%, the equivalent to 690,000 filmgoers less when compared to the January-March 2005 figures.

These figures also correspond to a €14.71m gross, which marks a decrease of 16.25% compared to the €17.57m grossed in the same period of 2005. January registered the worse results – 26.6% fewer admissions (almost 300,000 filmgoers less) – February, a decrease of 9.4% (115,000 less), while the month of March lost 276,000 filmgoers (a 24.6% decrease).

The most successful title at the box office was Steven Spielberg's Munich, which garnered 239,849 admissions and grossed over €1m. Though the Top 20 is dominated by US productions, three European titles emerge: Woody Allen's acclaimed British title Match Point takes third position with 202,980 admissions and an €885,032 gross, Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice [+see also:

comes in fifth (152,884 – €650,102) and Portuguese hit O Crime do Padre Amaro [+see also:

, produced by this year's Producer on the Move Alexandre Cebrian Valente, is number 19. Shown on 82 screens, the film had 59,892 admissions and grossed €254,349 in the first trimester.
