(lit. “Even Free is Fine”) will be released next Friday on approximately 70 screens. Shortly thereafter, it will go to Cannes, where it will take part in the Directors’ Fortnight. Not bad for the first feature film by 37 year-old actor Kim Rossi Stuart, a late debut considering that when he knocked on the door of his future agent 20 years ago, it was with a script in hand.

, loved as he is by fans and lauded by critics. His directorial debut, produced by Palomar and Rai Cinema, and distributed by 01 Distribution, tells the story of a young boy, Tommaso (Alessandro Morace), and his difficult time growing up in a turbulent family. His mother (Barbora Bobulova) come and goes, torn between her love for her children and her desire to escape, his father (Rossi Stuart) has huge financial problems and sudden outbursts of anger against everything and everyone, and his sister does nothing but make fun of him.

"I don’t know why I chose childhood as the subject with which to debut,” said Rossi Stuart “Perhaps because I myself am a child-director, I chose to do things in a certain order. I waited for many years, during which I learned a lot from the directors I met". The film’s producers believed in him from the very beginning, especially Carlo Degli Esposti of Palomar, the company that built its success around television series ("Il commissario Montalbano"): "But even in cinema, when there’s something interesting, we’re there”, he said. RAI Cinema is furthermore following its agenda of launching debut films that unite quality with market demands and is counting on pulling an encore with Anche libero va bene after the box office success of Night Before the Exams.
