KARLOVY VARY IFF Spain

Two Spanish titles competing for Crystal Globe

by

Spain will be well represented at the upcoming Karlovy Vary Film Festival (June 30-July 8) with a total of 10 titles: a mix of recent feature films and documentaries spread over six sections.

The two main titles in the spotlight are My Quick Way Out and the Spanish/Argentinean co-production Destiny, both screening in the official selection and competing for the festival's top award, the Crystal Globe.

Released in Spain last January My Quick Way Out marked the comeback of director Miguel Alvadalejo, two years after success of Bear Cub. Inspired by the so-called "cine quinqui", a genre of film focused on neighbourhood criminals that became extremely popular in Spain in the late 70s and early 80s, the film is based on the true story of Juan Carlos Delgado, known as the Pera, a problematic kid with a special ability for driving cars and also stealing them. Starring Borja Navas, Álex Casanovas, Mariola Fuentes, Fernando Tejero, Mar Regueras, José Luis García Pérez, My Quick Way Out was produced by Mediaproducción SL, Sogecine and Estudios Picasso.

Destiny, by Argentinean director Miguel Pereira, is based on a novel by Héctor Tizón about a drug dealer who seeks refuge in a small South American town. The film, starring Tristán Ulloa, Carolina Román, Mimí Ardu and Tukuta Gordillo, was co-produced by the Barcelona-based company Abs Production S.L..

In the Documentary section, the Spanish entries are Chema Rodríguez's The Railroad All-Stars, a film about a group of Guatemalan prostitutes who establish a football team in an attempt to bring attention to the injustices they have to face on a daily basis, and Elio Quiroga's Uwe about German expressionist painter Uwe Grumman.
