All about digital at the International Digital Film Forum

by

After three years at Cannes, the IDIFF (International Digital Film Forum), the only European event dedicated exclusively to digital cinema, which was attended by 700 industry professionals in 2006, will hold its fifth edition in la Rochelle on February 6-8, 2007.

The conferences on production and post-production include a session on The Digital Negative. Speakers include Marker Karahadian of Panavision, who will look at Michael Mann’s Miami Vice and French DoP Denis Rouden, while the evolution of cinema with regard to digital will be examined by a panel organised in partnership with the FICAM (Federation of Cinema, Audiovisual and Multimedia industries).

Six case studies illustrating the technical choices made depending on the constraints imposed by the films’ different genres, shooting styles and budgets will be the topic of a third round table discussion. Its participants will include French director Julien Seri, who will describe the production of his latest feature Scorpion [+see also:

(release February 21, 2007), and representatives from Quinta Industries, Digimage and Hoverlord. The Genesis camera and post-production in 4K will also be discussed.

The Distribution–Exhibition session will deal with The real cost of digital through an analysis of financing models followed by a debate entitled Digital at the heart of the relationships between distributors and exhibitors, moderated by Michel Gomez, General Director of ARP. Service providers will also present commercial offers of cinema equipment to the European market at the event.

Another highlight of the IDIFF programme is the Digital Film Market, a market for digital content available for theatrical screening, which will also organise an afternoon of screenings that will allow audiences to discover Sony’s 4K system and 3D projection.

For the first time, the event – organised by CN films, with the support of the MEDIA Programme and the CNC – will hold a seminar on Preparing one’s production, which gives European production companies the possibility to meet all suppliers involved in the preparation of films (regional support funds, studios, equipment rental companies, talent-spotting agencies, financial bodies) in one location.

Once again, the IDIFF will hold its workshop with a real moving picture studio (Panasonic, Thomson, Panavision and Dalsa cameras) and colour grading rooms and, last but not least, film training seminars for distributors and exhibitors.
