The Orphanage makes a splash

Juan Antonio Bayona’s feature debut The Orphanage [+see also:

has become the most successful Spanish production of 2007. Released on Thursday, October 11 by Warner Bros, the film attracted over one million moviegoers and grossed nearly €6m in only four days on screens.

The year had so far been a bad one with local production causing very little impact on the box office (news).

Produced by Guillermo del Toro's Rodar & Rodar and Telecinco Cinema – which was behind last year's biggest local title Alatriste [+see also:

The Orphanage brings back to the big screen Belén Rueda after her Goya-winning performance in Mar Adentro and a small part in Savage Grace [+see also:

]
, seen at the latest Cannes Film Festival (see news). Geraldine Chaplin, Fernando Cayo, Roger Princep, Mabel Ribera, Andrés Gertrudix and Montserrat Carulla complete the cast.

After conquering local audiences, The Orphanage is expected to get good buzz in the US and to be shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar (see news).
