Golden Lion for Lebanon, Special Jury Prize for Akin

Israeli debut director Samuel Maoz’s Lebanon (see review) has been awarded the Golden Lion by the 66th Venice International Film Festival jury (presided by Ang Lee). This award is much deserved by the dramatic film (co-produced by France and Germany) about the Lebanon War of 1982.

The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Iran’s Shirin Neshat for Women without Men (news), also co-produced by Germany and France. Meanwhile, German-born Turkish director Fatih Akin received the Special Jury Prize for his comedy Soul Kitchen (news).

Representing Italy on the Venice prize list are Russian-born actress Ksenia Rappoport, winner of the Volpi Cup for her performance in Giuseppe Capotondi’s The Double Hour (news), and Jasmine Trinca, who won the Mastroianni Prize for Best Emerging Actress for Michele Placido’s The Big Dream (news).

The UK’s Colin Firth scooped Best Actor for his role in Tom Ford’s A Single Man.

Best Set Design was presented to Sylvie Olive for Jaco Van Dormael’s visionary Mr. Nobody (news). Best Screenplay went to Todd Solondz’s Life During Wartime.

Finally, in the new Controcampo Italiano section, Best Film was awarded to Cosmonaut by Susanna Nicchiarelli (see interview).
