The A to Z of Cannes

Aside from the films in official competition, the organisers of the 60th Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27) yesterday unveiled a jam-packed programme of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the festival in style.

Heading the bill is To Each His Cinema, a collective film directed by 35 well-known directors (see article), which has its world premiere on May 20. The film will also be broadcast the same evening on French channel Canal+. The film, written and produced by Gilles Jacob, was co-produced by the festival and Elzévir Films.

The festival will host four tributes as part of its 60th Anniversary Celebrations: French production Boxes by British singer-actress Jane Birkin, Claude Lelouch’s Roman De Gare, One Hundred Nails [+see also:

by Italian director Ermano Olmi and Ulzhan [+see also:

by German helmer Volker Schlöndorff.

The annual directing and acting Masterclasses will this year be held by Martin Scorsese and Italian actor Sergio Castellitto respectively. Canadian composer Howard Shore, accompanied by David Cronenberg, will give the Music Masterclass. Alongside these regular events, the festival will also hold its promising Atelier (see news) and the important Cannes Film Market (see article), while its tried-and-trusted Tous les cinémas du monde will throw the spotlight on Polish production on May 22 and Slovenian production on May 25.

At Europe Day on May 26, European ministers of culture are expected to discuss with film personalities political solutions to changes in the digital landscape and further address themes dealt with at the Opening Meeting, devoted to the subject of Cinema, towards the audiences of tomorrow.
