Poirier’s The House to compete at San Sebastian

will represent France among the 16 features selected in official competition at the 55th San Sebastian Film Festival (September 20-29)

The 52 year-old self-taught director – born in Peru before following his parents to France as a teenager – was discovered with his feature debut Antonio’s Girlfriend at Berlin in 1993 and honoured with a Jury Award at Cannes 1997 for Western, which garnered 1.5m admissions in France. Other titles by the director include ...à la campagne (1995) and Te quiero (2001).

Released domestically on Wednesday by its producer Diaphana, The House is Poirier’s eighth feature and once again stars Catalan actor Sergi Lopez, who has appeared in all of the director’s films. Other cast members include Bérénice Béjo (OSS 117 [+see also:

), Barbara Schulz, Bruno Salomone, Cécile Rebboah and Florence Darel.

Written by the director, the film follows the peregrinations of a man about to divorce, who has difficulty being separated from his children and whose path crosses with that of two sisters selling their family house.

DoP is Pierre Milon and the film’s score by singer Lhasa (La Llorona).

Produced by Michel Saint-Jean for Diaphana, the €4.02m production received €750,000 in pre-sales and co-production from France 3 Cinéma and pre-sales from Canal +.

World sales are being handled by Films Distribution.
