28/04/2017 - Continental films such as Son of Sofia feature heavily on the list of international winners at this year’s US gathering

Last night, the 16^th annual Tribeca Film Festival (running from 19-30 April) announced the winners of its competition categories. The Best US Narrative Award went to Keep the Change, written and directed by Rachel Israel, who also won the Best New Narrative Director Award. The jurors of the International Narrative Feature Film competition, Willem Dafoe, Peter Fonda, Tavi Gevinson, Alessandro Nivola and Ruth Wilson, awarded European films or co-productions in practically all of the categories. For the fifth year in a row, Tribeca has supported innovation in all forms of storytelling. Treehugger: Wawona won the Storyscapes Award for its immersive storytelling, while Chris Fonseca: Keep It Moving received the Tribeca X Award, in recognition of its melding of advertising and entertainment. Finally, Tribeca Snapchat Shorts became a new official category, with Magic Show winning the award.

Tribeca’s Nora Ephron Prize, which aims to inspire a new generation of female filmmakers, went to Swiss writer-director Petra Volpe, the filmmaker behind The Divine Order, for the film’s “intrepid and compassionate storytelling, beautiful cinematography and complex characterisation of the female experience”.

This year’s festival included 97 feature-length films, 57 shorts and 30 immersive storytelling projects from 41 countries.
