The Cannes Marché du Film (which will be taking place from 14 May-23 May as part of the 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival) and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival have decided to join forces to create Animation Day, taking place in Cannes on Sunday 19 May at the Cinéma Olympia.

"With the evolution of distribution models, we are seeing a higher level of permeability between different cinematographic genres,” declared Jérôme Paillard, executive director of the Marché du Film. “There are a number of sales agents, distributors and producers who are now interested in animation – and not only animation for children. For Animation Day, I immediately wanted to partner with the Annecy Festival, whose expertise in this domain is unparalleled." A desire which was met with enthusiasm by Mickaël Marin, CEO of CITIA (which organises the Annecy Festival, the most important animation event in the world): "I can only revel in this initiative that enables our two entities to bolster the visibility of animated films at Cannes, and to support this marvellous dynamic experienced by animation feature film (...), this collaboration [will enable] diverse professionals to better seize the opportunities of an artform that is constantly pushing boundaries."

Within the 4th edition of Annecy Goes to Cannes, Animation Day will showcase a selection of five feature films in progress with exclusive first images aimed at distributors, investors, and international sales agents present in Cannes. The programme will include the French-Belgian feature SamSam [+see also:

, and the French-German-Belgian title Yakari, a Spectacular Journey by Xavier Giacometti (produced by Dargaud Media), as well as Dragonkeeper by Ignacio Ferreras and Jian-Ping Li (produced by Spanish company Dragoia Media and co-produced by China Film Animation). Worth highlighting as well are Canadian film Archipelago by Félix Dufour-Laperrière, and Brazilian feature Bob Spit - We Do Not Like People by Cesar Cabral. Animation Day will complement this spotlight on five films with a panel discussion examining adult animation film distribution.
