Alex de la Iglesia brings the Zugarramurdi witches to life

by

- The Bilbao-born director has just started shooting his eleventh feature, a black comedy to star Hugo Silva, Mario Casas, Carmen Maura, and Carolina Bang, among others

Today, October 1, shooting has kicked for Alex de la Iglesia’s new film, Las brujas de Zugarramurdi (lit. "The witches of Zugarramurdi"). In line with the Bilbao-born director’s filmography, it’s a “hilarious and frenetic” black comedy. Shooting is set to last two weeks in the Navarre town of Zugarramurdi that inspired the film’s title, before continuing for seven more weeks in Madrid.

The film will be the director’s first collaboration with Madrid-based producer Enrique Cerezo, who since 1998 has also been the president of EGEDA, Spain’s main entity to manage the rights of audiovisual producers, as well as the president of Madrid’s Atlético football team since 2003. Las brujas de Zugarramurdi is to be made on a budget of up to €6m, which makes it one of this year’s most ambitious productions.

Las brujas de Zugarramurdi tells the story of José, a divorced father, and Antonio, an unemployed youth, played respectively by the very popular Hugo Silva and Mario Casas, who decide to hold up a gold shop in Madrid. After making away with their booty, they highjack a taxi driven by Manuel and, with José’s eight-year-old son in tow and his ex-wife of their trail, escape towards France. But in deepest Navarra, they end up falling into the clutches of a horde of mad women who feed off human flesh...

Beside Silva and Casas, the film’s promising cast also includes Carmen Maura, Carolina Bang, Terele Pávez, Pepón Nieto, Secun de la Rosa, Enrique Villén, Santiago Segura, and Carlos Areces, among others.
