ICAA to support Isaki Lacuesta and Manuel Martín Cuenca’s new projects

- The Spanish Film Institute has announced projects to receive feature film production aid totalling €5.23m (about half of the amount two years ago)

Isaki Lacuesta (photo) and Manuel Martín Cuenca’s new projects, titled La próxima piel (lit. “The next skin”) and Caníbal (lit. “Cannibal”), are among the beneficiaries of the Institute of Film and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA)’ 2012 round of aid to the production of feature films. In total, the institute has handed out €5.23m among 32 feature films, of which 18 are fiction films and 14 are documentaries. Only two years ago, the amount for this line of aid was almost double, reaching €10m.

Lacuesta’s project is to be produced by Corte y Confección de películas and Sentido Films and is to receive a total of €418,376, while Martín Cuenca’s film, a Mod Producciones production (to which €395,337 have been allocated), is continuing on its journey after passing by the Atelier de Cannes (read more).

The largest amount of aid (€433,440) went to Deep, an animation film produced by The Thinklab Media, which will also be Julio Soto’s first feature after two shorts (El señor X in 2008 and Disección de una tormenta in 2010) and two medium-length films (Radiophobia in 2008, and a co-production with Romania Mi hermoso Dacia in 2010).

Other film projects selected include María Ripoll’s Dos mujeres (lit. "Two women"), the first film to be produced by Barcelona-based production company Rebelión Terrestre (headed by the Italian Alberto Marini) and one that is to be co-produced by Dakota Films and to receive €317,520, and a production by the Spanish subsidiary of Zentropa (headed by David Matamoros), José Skaf’s Vulcania [+see also:

 (€268,996). Director Eugenio Mira, who made his feature debut with the ambitious Agnosia (2010) and who has already entered the post-production phase of Grand Piano starring Elijah Wood, is to receive €146,160 for the production of Gernika (Travis Producciones and Pecado Films).

Among the 14 documentary films selected, an Apaches Entertainment (The Impossible [+see also:

) and Minimal Films production stands out: Diego Mas Trelles’s Sexo, maracas y chihuahuas (lit. “Sex, maracas, and chihuahuas” - €180,900). So does Refood to be directed by Daniel Monzón (Unit 211) and produced by Ikiru Films (€168,750).
