First clap for Diplomatie by Volker Schlöndorff

During the night of August 24th to 25th, 1944, the future of Paris is in the hands of General von Choltitz, the governor of Grand Paris, who is preparing, on Hitler’s orders, to blow up the capital. This is the starting point of Diplomatie, whose filming the veteran German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff (photo) has began today. André Dussollier and Niels Arestrup star in the roles they already held in the theatre production. The cast also includes Austrian actor Robert Stadlober and German actress Paula Beer (noticed in The Poll Diaries [+see also:

Written by the director with Cyril Gély (the author of the play by the same name on which the film is based), the screenplay sees the Swedish consul Raoul Nordling (Dussollier) very preoccupied as he goes up the secret staircase that leads to General von Choltitz’s suite (Arestrup) in the hotel Meurice. Because the German governor of Grand Paris, born from a long line of Prussian military men, has never had any hesitations when it came to follow orders. And the bridges over the Seine and the main buildings in Paris (the Louvre, Notre-Dame, the Eiffel Tower…) are mined with explosives and ready to blow up. Armed with all the weapons of diplomacy, the consul will try to convince the General not to follow the destructive orders.

Produced by Frank Le Wita and Marc de Bayser for Film Oblige, Diplomatie is coproduced by the delegate company Gaumont (which will handle the French distribution and international sales) and German company Blueprint Film. Notably funded by Arte, Eurimages, and the Ile-de-France and Bade-Wurtemberg regions, the movie will be filmed in Paris until September 21.

In the Film Oblige’s filmography The Last Mitterand by Robert Guédiguian stands out as well as Variété française by Frédéric Videau and L’autre Dumas [+see also:
