Following its world premiere at the tenth Fantastic Fest in Austin, USA, Danish director Mikkel Nørgaard’s thriller The Absent One [+see also:

 returned home to break local records: after the opening weekend, including previews, it had recorded 194,545 admissions – the best result ever for a Danish movie. 

The Absent One performed even better than The Keeper of Lost Causes [+see also:

, the first instalment in the Jussi Adler-Olsen franchise from the same team (scripted by Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg, and produced by Louise VesthJonas Bagger and Peter Aalbæk Jensen for Zentropa Entertainments), which reached 175,314 tickets.

“It is a great start – word of mouth on the film has been really strong, so at best it could exceed 700,000 ticket sales, like The Keeper of Lost Causes, which ended up as the number-one Danish film on last year’s charts,” said Jan Lehmann, managing director of Nordisk Film Distribution, which released the movie across 130 screens.

In the second part of the four-picture series, deputy detective superintendent Carl Mørck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and his sidekick, Assad (Fares Fares), of Copenhagen Police’s Department Q for “cases of special focus”, investigate a 1994 case in which two young twins were found brutally murdered in a summer cottage.

Co-starring Søren PilmarkDanica CurcicPilou Asbæk and David Dencik, the film sees Mørck and Assad reopening the investigation, which was originally concluded when police first suspected a group of upper-class students from a nearby boarding school, and a local outsider confessed and was convicted.
