- CANNES 2015: The Cannes Film Market has got off to a flying start with the first pre-sales of Valérian by Luc Besson
On the first day of the Film Market of the 68th Cannes Film Festival, the French international sales agents have whipped out a number of announcements.
EuropaCorp is launching pre-sales for its English-language science-fiction production Valérian by Luc Besson, starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. This adaptation of the iconic comic book created in 1967 by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières will recount the misfortunes of two agents from the spatio-temporal service tasked with defending the Earth in the 28th century, and will commence production in December. Also of note on EuropaCorp’s slate is the project Twice by Jean-François Richet, an English-language thriller (with a screenplay by Luc Besson, Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt), in which a woman finds out that her husband owns an actual arsenal of weapons – after 20 years of marriage.
Jean-François Richet is taking a good deal of the limelight, as Wild Bunch (read the news on its line-up) has revealed that his film Blood Father, another English-language movie currently in post-production and toplined by Mel Gibson (produced by Paris-based outfit Why Not), has been pre-purchased for over 50 territories.
Le Pacte (read the line-up news) will be selling and is co-producing Catch the Moon by Palestinian director Sameh Zoabi, a comedy set in the Gaza Strip, in which a father and son are trying to get a car into the territory despite the Israeli blockade. British firm Sixteen Films is handling the production, which can also count German outfit Pandora and Egypt among its partners.
