Once again this year, the San Sebastián Film Festival brought together members of the film industry for its awards ceremony, held in the San Telmo Museum. José Luis Rebordinos, the director of the gathering, hosted the event, saying: “We hope your presence here enables these projects to become a reality and be launched on the international stage.” Indeed, this has already happened with a plethora of titles that have been brought to fruition, such as Ixcanul Volcano [+see also:

. It was given out courtesy of companies Daniel Goldstein, Deluxe-Spain, Dolby Iberia, Laserfilm Cine y Video, No Problem Sonido, Nephilim Producciones and Wanda Visión, and saw 113 films in progress, hailing from 20 countries, vying for the prize.

Directed by Eliane Caffé (Kenoma, The Storytellers and Midday Sun), this co-production between France (Tu vas voir) and Brazil (Aurora Filmes) uses a documentary style infused with humour to tackle the topic of the many refugees from various countries who are squatting in buildings in Sao Paulo. “The homeless people who appear in our film will be delighted by this news,” the filmmaker asserted.

For the first time, the winning film has also received the Ibermedia TV Award, handed out by the Conference of Latin American Film Authorities (CACI) through the Ibermedia Programme, which consists of the inclusion of the movie in the Subsidy Programme for Television Broadcasting. This entails authorisation for non-exclusive broadcasting on Ibermedia TV and Ibermedia Digital worth $25,000 (for a fiction feature), or $15,000 in the case of a documentary.

The €10,000 Award for the Best Project at the Fourth Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum (read more), sponsored by EGEDA (the Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Association), went to La omisión, a co-production between Argentina, Germany and France promoted by Buenos Aires’ Trapecio Cine, which will be directed by Sebastián Schjaer. In addition, a Special Mention was given to the project Memoria del calabozo, which will be directed by award-winning Uruguayan filmmaker Álvaro Brechner and is benefiting from backing from Tornasol Films (Spain).
