Sorrentino's The Young Pope to be shown as a special event at the Venice Film Festival

The first two episodes of the original series The Young Pope, written and directed by Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino and starring Jude Law, Diane Keaton, Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara and Ludivine Sagnier, will be shown in a special event out of competition at this year’s 73rd Venice International Film Festival (31 August - 10 September 2016), directed by Alberto Barbera.
“It’s an honour for me to be returning to Venice,” stated Sorrentino. “I attended the festival with my first film, and now I’m going back with my first television series. I don’t believe in coincidences, instead I think that now, like back then, the festival takes risks. Fifteen years ago, it did so by choosing the debut work of a young director. This year, it’s doing so by confirming that it is open to television, acknowledging the role of TV series in the evolution of visual language”.
The first two episodes of the series, which centres around the story of Lenny Belardo, aka Pius XIII, the first American Pope in history, will have their world premiere on 3 September in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Venice Lido.
The Young Pope is an original Sky, HBO and Canal+ co-production which will air starting from October in 5 countries (Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland and Austria) and in France on Canal+. The series is produced by Wildside, co-produced by Haut et Court TV and MEDIAPRO, and is being distributed internationally by FremantleMedia International.
