Written by Marine Francen, Jacqueline Surchat and Jacques Fieschi (who has racked up three nominations for the César Award for Best Screenplay and is Nicole Garcia’s writing partner) and based on the story L'Homme semence by Violette Ailhaud (published in 1919), the story gets under way in 1852. Violette Ailhaud is old enough to get married when her village in the Lower Alps is cruelly deprived of all its men by the repression that followed the republican uprising of December 1851. For the next two years, the village is completely cut off. The women swear an oath that if a man should come, he will become their shared husband, so that life may continue to flourish in each of their wombs.

Produced by Sylvie Pialat and Benoît Quainon for Les Films du WorsoThe Sower is benefiting from a co-production by Belgian outfit Versus Production, pre-purchases by Canal+ and Ciné+, and backing from the CNC’s advance on receipts, the Languedoc-Roussillon region, and the Cinémage, Indéfilms and Cinéventure Soficas. The shoot will take place in Lozère and will be split into two sessions, the first from 16-26 August, followed by the second from 28 September-24 October. Distribution in French theatres will be handled by ARP Sélection, while the international sales are being managed by Celluloïd Dreams.
