Tosar and Etura reunited in Balagueró’s thriller Mientras Duermes

film profile] saga, is all ready to start shooting on Monday May 31 on Mientras Duermes (“While You Sleep”), his fifth sole directorial feature. It will be produced by Julio Fernández for Filmax, with backing from Canal+ and TVE.

For his new film, Balagueró has put together an outstanding cast including two of the most talented actors of the moment, Luis Tosar and Marta Etura, who both won gongs at the latest Goya Awards for Cell 211 [+see also:

film profile] (see news). They will star alongside another safe bet: Alberto San Juan.

Balagueró will not disappoint his fans with his new film, a disturbing thriller set in a neighbourhood where nothing is what it appears to be. It is scripted by Turin-born Alberto Marini, who previously worked with the director on To Let (see review), a TV drama made as part of the Stories To Keep You Awake series.

Balagueró has so far established himself as one of the most acclaimed genre film directors in Spain and abroad, with works including The Nameless (1999), Darkness [+see also:

film profile] (2005) and the two [Rec] instalments, co-directed with Paco Plaza in 2007 (see review) and 2009 (see news). Moreover, he is preparing the saga’s closing instalment [Rec] Apocalypse, which he will direct alone but with collaboration from Plaza, who is currently immersed in work on [Rec] Genesis.

These two new [Rec] instalments and Mientras Duermes will be presented at the upcoming Cannes Film Market by Filmax International (see news), the production company’s international sales arm. The latter will also represent some of the most interesting Spanish projects around, including Eduardo Chapero-Jackson’s Verbo (see news); Eugenio Mira’s Agnosia; Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Intruders (see news); and Xabi Giménez’s Cruzando el Límite (“Crossing the Boundary”, see news).
