Indefatigable Swedish detectives are back on new assignments

by

- "Crime still works well in Swedish cinemas," said the Swedish Film Institute's CEO Anna Serner, introducing this year's first 19 local releases including three thrillers with Wallander, Wijk and Falk

Crime pays in the cinema - "I do not know what it is about us Swedes that makes it work so well on the screen, but it does not seem to change," said Swedish Film Institute Managing Director Anna Serner earlier this week (January 13), when she introduced the first part of the 2013 film season at Stockholm's Filmhuset.

19 local productions are waiting in the wings - eight of them have been supported by the institute, including three by woman directors, four by men, one by a woman and a man. Besides that the crime wave continues, she observed that the repertoire covers both newcomers and veteran "old foxes", and that the children's film which will open in the spring (March 29), Stephan Apelgren's Eskil and Trinidad, has also been selected for the Berlinale.

Preliminary institute statistics show that last year's  cinema admissions exceeded 18 million, up 1.5 million on 2011, and accordingly the best result since the early 2000s. Local fare accounted for app 4 million, or the second-best since 2001 (after 5.7 million in 2009), controlling 22% of the market, as in 2012.
