Maria Hofstäetter came to the forefront of international attention after starring in Ulrich Seidl’s Hundstage (Dog Days), and won the best actress award at the 2001 edition of the Gijon International Film Festival in Spain. She also appeared in Harald Sicheritz’s commercial hit, Poppitz, Michael Haneke’s Wolfzeit, Ulrike Schweiger’s Twinni and Michael Sturminger’s Hurensohn. Hofstäetter is well known at home for her stage work and she recently won an international theatre award for her work in Werner Schwab’s Die Präsidentinnen.

"My last film was a big challenge, because I played a mentally handicapped girl. And when we were shooting the film nobody knew that I only was acting. All my colleagues thought that I really was handicapped - and this for four months! My main work is independent theatre in Austria. I act and produce in a small theatre-group and sometimes I work in films. I'm very interested in non-commercial films, in auteur-films... that's what I want to do.
Singing: 'Großer Gott wir loben dich, Herr wir preisen deine Stärke...' and so on and so on... that's it: 'Great Lord we love you and you are the best'".
