by Sergio Ríos Pérez
21/12/2012 - Barcelona-born director and producer Jaume Collet Serra is currently shooting what will be his first production for Spanish-American company Ombra Films, a film titled Mindscape being directed by Madrid-born filmmaker Jorge Dorado. Filming kicked off on October 16 in Madrid and is currently ongoing in Spain (Barcelona and surroundings), France (Dordogne), and Canada (Montreal).
Mindscape will be Dorado's first feature as well as the first chapter in a collaboration between Ombra Films (that Collet Serra directs with Juan Solá) and StudioCanal, who are to handle the film's distribution in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany as well as its international sales. Together they intend to make genre films in English, directed by Spanish emerging talents. In Spain, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros.
Spanish directors of genre films continue to enjoy an astounding reputation on the international market, especially on the American market whose industrial makeup offers many opportunities to new talents from the rest of the world. In the case of the Spaniards, directors such as J. A. Bayona, Jaume Balagueró, and Paco Plaza or even Nacho Vigalondo, to cite just a few, have been noted for their fantastic ability to combine innovative visual language with stories that are rich in content.
The story of Mindscape, written by Guy and Martha Holmes, centres on a man with the ability to enter people's memories who is working on the case of a brilliant but problematic teenager to determine whether she is a sociopath or the victim of a trauma.
Mindscape is produced by Jaume Collet Serra and Juan Solá for Ombra Films, Peter Safran for The Safran Company, and Mercedes Gamero for Antena 3 Films, in association with Miguel A. Faura for Roxbury Pictures. It is being made on a budget of up to €4.35m.
